Building schools

Afghan Connection aims to provide excellent school facilities for existing schools, many of which lack any kind of proper building.  Each construction will have new classroom blocks and access to a resource centre that will house a library, computer room, meeting hall and science laboratory.  We also provide latrines, a well and for the girls' schools, a surrounding wall if necessary.

Sport will be encouraged in all of our schools for girls and boys.

The community is keen to collaborate with Afghan Connection and has provided land and labour for our work.

Our aim is to fund at least 2 school contructions each year.

For 2013 these schools will be Abdul Basir Shahid School and Bibi Zainab School

Community Based Schools

In rural isolated areas such as Worsaj, many young children, especially girls are denied an education because it is just too far for them to walk to the nearest formal primary school. Community Based Education provides a solution to this problem and gives these young children the chance to benefit from schooling at the primary level.

Classes are often established in the house of the Imam or in the Mosque and the teacher is a member of the community who is known and trusted by the parents. We have seen the number of community classes grow as more community schools are set-up and the the demand for education increases.

Each year we aim to support up to 35 community schools          DONATE NOW....

Where We Work

Worsaj is a mountainous district of North East Afghanistan with a population of 70,000.  Afghan Connection's education initiative here is designed to make a more sustainable impact in a smaller area, rather than continuing to fund school construction across broader geographical areas of Afghanistan.

The majority of adults in Worsaj are illiterate, but are determined that their children should have an education.  The area is very remote and difficult to reach, but once there the security is good and we work closely with our partners The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan who are well known and respected in the region.

.

The impact of our projects in Worsaj has been so successful that we have been invited to support the neighbouring district of Fakhar.

Our Latest School Project News

On 19th September 2012, a special ceremony was held to celebrate the inauguration of Khadeja Kubretal Girls’ School

The school was officially opened by the Governor of the Worsaj District and attended by the Takhar Provisional Educational Director, his deputy, and senior staff. Students, teachers and community elders also attended. The ceremony was recorded by local media and will be broadcast on local TV and possibly even national TV.

AC first visited this school in Autumn 2010, when Dr Fane was invited for tea by the Headmaster, and arrived to find hundreds of girls asking her to build a school. Construction work began in Spring 2011 and when Dr Fane visited the school again, she saw that the men from the village were on a fixed rota, giving their time up for free, to move the village road and make way for the new Girls’ School.

The school is now completed and comprises 8 classrooms, latrines, a well and 2 administration rooms. In addition, there is also Resource Centre housing a library, computer suite, science laboratory and meeting hall.

How does this construction make a difference?

Funding for this school has transformed the working environment for all the girls in this school. Not only will they have proper classrooms but the facilities of the Resource Centre will give them the chance to compete with some of the best schools in the North of the country.

In addition, parents will feel happier to send their girls to school knowing that they are being educated in a secure building with classrooms and desks. The transformation of this school will also encourage more parents to send their girls to school and this will benefit everyone in the community.
