UK Registered Charity No. 1092134

I am a doctor and set up Afghan Connection (AC) in 2002 following several working visits to Afghanistan during the Russian War and under the Taliban regime. What I saw during those visits was a beautiful country devastated by war. Girls were denied an education and with women banned from working, many boys' schools lacked teachers and many schools had been destroyed.

Afghan Connection partners with 10x10...

10x10 is a global movement for girls' education -

People working together to change girls' lives.

At the heart of this campaign is a pioneering film that tells the stories of 10 different girls from 10 different countries. Afghan Connection is honoured to be involved in this campaign as we share the view that  "Educating girls breaks the cycle of poverty and changes the world". (www.10x10act.org).

Dr Fane was joined by Amy Atkinson (a 10x10 producer) and Leslie Knott (Film maker) on her last visit to Afghanistan, to help find a story of an inspirational girl to feature in the film and who has been helped by the work that AC has done.

Dieci Cantabile

Dieci Cantabile held their annual Christmas concert on 22nd December 2011 at Englefield house. The evening was a fantastic success, with beautiful performances - not to mention some performances that got a few chuckles! We are thrilled to report the the concert raised almost £2000 for The Annoy School construction, North Afghanistan.

Afghan Connection's ethos:
If we can change one life for the better, our work is worthwhile.

In the last 8 years AC have raised well over 2 million pounds and funded 32 schools for over 30,000 children, working closely with the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA). We have linked 20 UK schools to Afghan schools in our Twin School Project, involving 26,000 children in this country alone. A new focus on sport has led to a partnership with the MCC Spirit of Cricket, and the financing of 17 concrete wickets and organized cricket camps throughout Afghanistan, including coaching camps for girls. Most recently we have established a new education project, called The Worsaj Education Initiative, in the Worsaj region of North East Afghanistan in a drive to make our work in education more holistic and sustainable.  In health we collaborate with other Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) which target health projects that are small but have a big impact on maternal and child health.

Education

AC funds the construction and equipping of schools in rural areas receiving little aid from the outside world. From 2011 AC have been supporting education in the north eastern province of Worsaj, providing Literacy training, Community Based Schools, Model Schools and capacity building for teachers and education authorities.

Cricket

The Afghan Cricket Team is a symbol of hope for the people of Afghanistan. With the support of the MCC, private donors and the national team AC is nurturing the sporting aspirations of girls and boys across Afghanistan.

Twin Schools

The Twin School Project, is an integral part of our work, partially funded by a grant from the European Union. It aims to improve understanding between children of different cultures, to provide teaching based around the Millennium Development Goals and to bring support to Afghan schools isolated from the outside world. This 3 year project culminated in a Parliamentary event in November 2011 to raise awareness of the need for Education in Afghanistan.

Health

In Afghanistan, 1 in 5 children dies before the age of 5 and a mother dies in childbirth every half an hour. By supporting medical training, vaccination programmes, hospital and clinic refurbishment and provision of emergency medical supplies, AC aims to help reduce these appalling statistics.
